At all times an elegant tree myrtle was considered a symbol of well-being, beauty and eternal youth. The ancient Greeks associated his appearance with the goddess Aphrodite, who, according to the legends, loved this plant very much, that's why it was planted around its temples, during the annual holidays they were decorated with myrtle flowers and wreaths.

Notable townspeople necessarily washed themselves with water, which insisted on myrtle leaves, because such a solution was considered a true elixir of vivacity and health. Today essential oils are produced from shoots, leaves and flowers of myrtle, which are widely used in perfumery and medicine.

In total, there are about 40 species of this beautiful plant in nature, which is most common in Western Asia, North Africa, the Caribbean islands and Mediterranean lands. In our latitudes the myrtle is mainly grown at home, which is very justified: there are several species that over the years will delight you with lush foliage and gentle flowering.

By the way, this is the culture that can easily be trimmed, it can be given absolutely any shape, which is why it is often used to decorate rooms in the style of bonsai.

In addition, the plant has pronounced phytoncide and useful properties, destroying most of the pathogenic bacteria and microbes in the room it is worth.

How to grow?

In nature this plant is capable of reaching 5 meters in height, in the room its maximum height is 60-100 cm, which is very convenient. In indoor culture, the common myrtle is the most common and simple in terms of care, which has glossy pointed leaves and blooms with small white flowers that radiate an extremely pleasant aroma.

By the way, blossoms of this kind can be achieved already for 4-5 years of cultivation, while caring for it, in essence, boils down to elementary actions, which, however, can not be forgotten. For example, the myrtle badly forgives irregular watering, besides it needs a microclimate with high humidity, which means that it is important to constantly spray it.

So, if you have acquired this elegant culture, then for starters it is extremely important for you to understand its new home location. Myrtle does not like and will not grow in the shade, he prefers bright but diffuse light, can even carry a small amount of direct rays.

The most ideal location is the windows facing west or east. If the plant had to be located on the southern windows, then do not forget to protect it from the noonday rays in the summer.

Myrtle trees, although they like bright light, but prefer coolness, and therefore make sure that the room in which the plant is located is well ventilated. In the summer, they can be taken out onto the street, most importantly, do not place it under the open sunlight.

In winter, make sure that the air temperature does not fall below 5 °, the ideal level is 8-10 °.As we have already said, the myrrh tree is extremely sensitive to regular watering: from the beginning of spring and until the very end of autumn it should be watered abundantly, in winter the volumes decrease, the main thing is to ensure that the soil does not dry out. Water for irrigation is better to use a permanent, also make sure that it does not stagnate in the pan.

Soil and top dressing

While the plant is very young, it must be transplanted every year in the spring, adults are transplanted as needed, usually no more than once in 2-3 years. At the bottom of the pot must spread a wide drainage, and as a substrate is ideal soil for palm trees, which can be bought in a flower shop.

When transplanting it is very important not to bury the bottom of the trunk strongly in the soil, the trees do not like it. As a top dressing use a complex flower fertilizer, which must be introduced, from early spring until late autumn, once every two weeks. During the winter dormancy, it is not necessary to feed the plant.

In fact, if you follow all the above rules of care, then, most likely, you will be able to grow a healthy and beautiful plant, but after all the flavor of myrtle trees is that they can be given the original crown! How to properly cut and pinch the plant, so as not to harm him?

If the purpose of growing is abundant flowering, then it is not necessary to get very keen on the haircut, because flower buds simply will not form. As for the formation, then, for starters, it is important to decide on the desired future view.

It is better not to stain the stem much, because it is not very strong. If the lateral shoots are cut off, the myrtle will most likely take the form of a tree with a branchy crown, and if the upper shoot, the shape of a lush bush. If to give a plant to itself, then, most likely, it will take the form of a pyramid.

In principle, you can achieve more complex forms, for example, to form a thick and squat pillow, but remember that in this case they should be generously fed.
